Well I was doing great with LOAD, until I wasn't doing so great. I managed to get the worst headache of my life but kept on scrapping. I even completed a couple of LOs with my head on my desk. Then the headache won. After 8 days of not scrapping - or doing much of anything else, I'm back in the race! Today's prompt was all about size. So I scrapped small pics! It's quite simple - but took me longer than "simple" time. Who cares? It's done!

Sometimes I feel like I live in Playmobil Funpark & most of the time I love it. (Just don't step on any of it!) Kyle absolutely loves his Playmobil (and so do Mom and Dad). Kyle's imagination is simply amazing and totally endless when he's in "Playmobil-land". I think it's fantastic when the construction truck is transporting the Gladiators passed the thieving pirates and bumpy road work to a battle at the castle against ferocious knights, but all is halted for the fire fighters and their trucks to put out a fire, of course, started by a fire breathing dragon. ~Our living room winter 09-10

Day 2 and LOAD is a challenge!
I knew scrapping a layout a day would be a challenge - but so much of a challenge by day 2? Of course you just know something is going to happen when one signs up for such a project. So for the first time ever I have Kyle and Vika sick together! They don't get sick like "normal" kids. They don't really slow down, even with fevers of 102. They just meltdown more often and with much more intensity. I will say it was somewhat amusing today when Vika discovered that she was mad at both mommy and daddy and that created a quandary for her. Lately she loves to tell me, "I don't like you!!! I like Daddy!!!" (Usually followed by me saying, "That's OK, I still love you." Her, "I love you too mommy." But with her mad at both of us and us both in the room, she was really quite perplexed about what should come next after, "I don't like you Mommy! I don't like you Daddy!....*thinking*...I like...." (Stands with arms crossed pouting). Even after several attempts she couldn't finish this sentence.
Thank goodness for Brian. I was able to finish my layout for day 2. It's a great photo of Vika with her flower garden. (Ssshhhhh, don't tell her the flowers are all dead. She's as proud as can be!) Here's the journaling:
I was so happy the day you brought me home some beautiful and very colourful flowers. But as all flowers do these passed their prime and I put them outside the back door to make their way to the compost pile. It didn't take long for you to discover them and plant your own flower garden. You were absolutely thrilled with yourself and your garden. It goes to show that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

LOAD Day 1
So we're off! The goal is to do 31 layouts in 31 days! I'm sweating already! It took me until 9pm day 1 to get my first page posted online. Not like I ever push the time limits. But I did it. Day one is a success.
Here's a LO with a pic of Miss V that I took last week. She just happened to be in the right place at the right time for that light - and my camera also happened to be in the right place at the right time! My photo of the LO isn't great (yeah, I'll work on those skills next month!) It was really difficult to capture the colours of the photo and the colours of the papers accurately. It's not too bad though, except for the glaring light blinding you - wasn't thinking of the light fixture behind me! Overall - I think I'm off to a good start.

Speaking of Miss V, she's doing OK. She was diagnosed with asthma (officially - as they have to have two flare ups over the age of 2) a week ago. We've struggled to get things under control and we're getting there...slowly. Much slower than I would like. This week she was diagnosed with a sinus infection (so she takes after her momma in more than just looks). And only a few hours after getting home from the doctor's she had a fever of 102. She's doing better today and there were even some laughs and giggles. Now if we can only get some sleep...

Six months. Really?
I guess that is how long it's been since I've posted! Wow, time does fly, whether you're having fun or not!
So I've decided to add a new dimension to my blog. I'm going to start sharing some of my crafty creations along with family goings ons. (My friend April T - I can still hear you calling me "crrrraaaaffty".) I guess my real goal is to get something posted more than once every six months.
Yeah, we'll see how well that goes. Tomorrow I start my first ever attempt at a Layout A Day (LOAD) challenge for the month of May. Yes, that is the goal, to create and post online, one scrapbook layout a day for every day in May. I wonder how many days it will take until my children think they are motherless. We'll see how it goes. I'm well stocked with adhesives, paper, embellishments. I've even loaded the freezer with frozen meals. Hmm, I guess I should have put "clean up scrap area" on the list. Someone might have to send in a search a rescue team to find me in a few weeks. Actually, that's almost necessary now.
So here's my first crafty sharing:
This is a headband (with hat) that I made for Miss V. I bought a plain headband at a craft store and wrapped it with black grosgrain ribbon. I then decorated a doll hat with ribbon, bling and feathers and actually sewed it to the ribbon on the headband. Total cost was about $3. I thought that with cocktail hats and feather headpieces making the comeback my Miss V couldn't be without.
Please note - Miss V has informed many a people that her showgirl "costume" is not a costume, but just normal clothes. As for the tickets she's holding, those were not a planned prop. I actually didnt' realize what she was holding until I had uploaded the pics.

Hallowe'en
Pheww! We made it. We survived Hallowe'en. Now we just have to survive the sugar rush for the next few weeks! It was certainly different than our last Hallowe'en, spent in Italy, but it really was nice to be back to our old traditions - minus the rain.
I suppose you could say our Halloween started Tuesday with a visit to the pumpkin patch and then carving pumpkins Thursday evening - but I don't have the pics ready to go up for that so stayed tune. But please note that we, as parents were crazy enough to give Kyle full run of the pumpkin carving tools (supervised!) and he carved his very own pumpkin!!!!
Hallowe'en actually started Friday morning with Kyle heading off to Dads and Donuts at his school. It was also Storybook Character day so he was all dressed up as Peter Pan as he headed off with Papa. Dad, dressed as Cpt. Hook met up with them and I guess they were quite popular for the cameras. (I'd love a picture if anyone has one to share!) Kyle returned home as he actually attends school in the afternoon. The morning continued with one of my favourite traditions. The moms' group I belong to arranges for the children to go Trick or Treating at a retirement home. The residents and staff are always so excited to see the kids and it really is a fun experience for everyone. It is also very fun for ALL the adults to dote over all the adorable costumes worn by the kids. For this Kyle went as Cpt. Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Vika went as Little Bo Peep (which I'm proud to say I made - and the emphasis is on "I", as my mom only did one hem and that has to be a record!)
Kyle then headed off to school , still as Cpt. Jack and had a great time with his class Halloween party.
Saturday Trick or Treating began at Ami and Papa's with all of us in costume. (Mental note - skip the wig when I already have a headache!) Then we headed off to the mall for indoor trick or treating in hopes of avoiding some of the rain. I guess most of the area had the same idea! It was very well run, but too crowded for us! So we came home. We lit up our Jack O Lanterns and took the kids trick or treating on our street - in the rain. The advantage of only two families on the street having kids - our kids get LOTS of candy - but I'm starting to think that's a disadvantage from a parent's perspective! The kids had a great time! The only let down was a lack of other trick or treaters for Kyle and Brian to scare! They love to hide in the bushes and around corners and scare the older trick or treaters. I think we only had about 12 kids -more candy for us! :0 And that includes the 3 teenagers!

Kyle's back to school
Once again, I'm a little late with things, but it seems I am slowly making chronological progress and will soon give up on catching up and just live in the current moment.
Here is Kyle off to school - his first day of Kindergarten - sort of. It's his first day of kindergarten in the US. He completed a year of kindergarten in Italy because they start there at 4 yrs old. Now he's 5 and starting Kindergarten all over again - and he's totally excited about it! He is in half days. We were not initially thrilled about afternoons but once our schedule got readjusted we felt threatened when they announced they were adding another morning class and we could be switched. Thankfully Kyle is still in afternoons.
Kyle is thoroughly enjoying Mrs. Fogg's class and practically runs to school everyday. It's worked out especially well that most of the kids in our neighbourhood are in his class and we walk home with one of his classmates and his little sister who is the same age as Vika. It helps that there is a park that we have to pass on the way home so the kids can usually get some time to burn off some energy.
Vika still misses Kyle fiercely everyday and can't wait to get her hugs from him when he is let out of school.
I can't believe my little guy has turned into such a handsome, smart and humourous kindergartener already!

Last day of school
I know I'm back stepping a little bit but I wanted to share this with some of our family and friends closer to home and share the pics with our friends abroad who may have kids in them. And, hey, it's not yet Kyle's first day of school here so I'm not that late! :) (well it wasn't Kyle's fitrst day back at school when I wrote this. Too bad blogger won't post my
Kyle’s last day of school –
The decision to put Kyle in Italian Kindergarten this year was not an easy one! I had it in my head that he would be attending preschool one more year – three half days a week. In the end we decided to send him to an Italian International school in the next town. He attended Italian Kindergarten – full days, five days a week. In the end it was a fantastic decision. The language of instruction was Italian and it was a challenge for Kyle. However, he thrived! By the new year he had made a huge transition and was pretty much fluent in Italian – well as fluent as a four year old can be! Kyle had a fantastic year! He made some wonderful friends from all around the world – Finn from Ireland, Elspeth from England, Adam and Ian from the US, Alessia and several others from Italy, and even more friends from places like Spain and Greece.
The school year did not officially end for Kyle’s class until June 30. With everything going on, including our move, we decided to pull Kyle from school early. I had been told by other parents to do whatever I could to make sure we didn’t miss the year end celebration. We made sure that Kyle – and all of us, made it to the celebration on June 19 – Kyle’s last day of school. It was an incredibly hot and humid day. So hot and humid that at one point at about 9:30 am I looked over at the mom next to me and we watched the make up melt down each other’s face – and the parade hadn’t even begun! The classes of the infant school marched out on to the parking lot and did the most heartwarming performance! Several times I was fighting the tears – and I didn’t even understand the Italian!
The morning was the perfect way for Kyle to finish a fantastic year! He spent it with some very important friends and his wonderful teacher Miss Ira, and he got to see Miss Hannah and Miss Iris – his very valued English teachers!
Kudos go out to all the staff at The International School of Lago Patria! We – I mean Kyle – had an excellent year! His education has a positive and strong foundation set and he has begun to develop a true love of learning – all of it giving him a fantastic experience that we will treasure for many, many years to come!
